Calculation Examples
Example 1: New Car $30,000, 5 Years, 15% Annual + First Year 20%
Input Values
Calculation Steps
- Purchase price: $30,000 (new car)
- Depreciation model: First Year Drop + Annual
- First year drop: 20%
- Annual depreciation rate: 15%
- Year 1: $30,000 × (1 - 0.20) = $30,000 × 0.80 = $24,000 (lost $6,000)
- Year 2: $24,000 × (1 - 0.15) = $24,000 × 0.85 = $20,400 (lost $3,600)
- Year 3: $20,400 × (1 - 0.15) = $20,400 × 0.85 = $17,340 (lost $3,060)
- Year 4: $17,340 × (1 - 0.15) = $17,340 × 0.85 = $14,739 (lost $2,601)
- Year 5: $14,739 × (1 - 0.15) = $14,739 × 0.85 = $12,528 (lost $2,211)
- Estimated resale value after 5 years: $12,528
- Total depreciation: $30,000 - $12,528 = $17,472
- Depreciation percentage: ($17,472 ÷ $30,000) × 100 = 58.2%
- Average depreciation per year: $17,472 ÷ 5 = $3,494/year

Example 2: Used Car $15,000, 3 Years, 10% Annual
Input Values
Calculation Steps
- Purchase price: $15,000 (used car)
- Depreciation model: Simple Annual Percent
- Annual depreciation rate: 10%
- Year 1: $15,000 × (1 - 0.10) = $15,000 × 0.90 = $13,500 (lost $1,500)
- Year 2: $13,500 × (1 - 0.10) = $13,500 × 0.90 = $12,150 (lost $1,350)
- Year 3: $12,150 × (1 - 0.10) = $12,150 × 0.90 = $10,935 (lost $1,215)
- Estimated resale value after 3 years: $10,935
- Total depreciation: $15,000 - $10,935 = $4,065
- Depreciation percentage: ($4,065 ÷ $15,000) × 100 = 27.1%
- Average depreciation per year: $4,065 ÷ 3 = $1,355/year
- Note: Used cars depreciate slower than new cars since most initial value loss has already occurred

Example 3: 5 Years Ownership
Input Values
Calculation Steps
- Purchase price: $25,000 (new car)
- Depreciation model: Simple Annual Percent
- Annual depreciation rate: 15%
- Year 1: $25,000 × 0.85 = $21,250
- Year 2: $21,250 × 0.85 = $18,063
- Year 3: $18,063 × 0.85 = $15,353
- Year 4: $15,353 × 0.85 = $13,050
- Year 5: $13,050 × 0.85 = $11,093
- Estimated resale value after 5 years: $11,093
- Total depreciation: $25,000 - $11,093 = $13,907
- Depreciation percentage: ($13,907 ÷ $25,000) × 100 = 55.6%
- Average depreciation per year: $13,907 ÷ 5 = $2,781/year

Example 4: Luxury Car, High Depreciation
Input Values
Calculation Steps
- Purchase price: $35,000 (new luxury car)
- Depreciation model: First Year Drop + Annual
- First year drop: 20%
- Annual depreciation rate: 15%
- Year 1: $35,000 × 0.80 = $28,000 (lost $7,000 in first year)
- Year 2: $28,000 × 0.85 = $23,800
- Year 3: $23,800 × 0.85 = $20,230
- Year 4: $20,230 × 0.85 = $17,196
- Year 5: $17,196 × 0.85 = $14,617
- Estimated resale value after 5 years: $14,617
- Total depreciation: $35,000 - $14,617 = $20,383
- Depreciation percentage: ($20,383 ÷ $35,000) × 100 = 58.2%
- Average depreciation per year: $20,383 ÷ 5 = $4,077/year
- Note: Depreciation is often the largest ownership cost, especially for new luxury cars

Example 5: Fixed Resale Value Model
Input Values
Calculation Steps
- Purchase price: $22,000
- Depreciation model: Fixed Resale Value
- Estimated resale value: $8,000 (after 4 years)
- Total depreciation: $22,000 - $8,000 = $14,000
- Depreciation percentage: ($14,000 ÷ $22,000) × 100 = 63.6%
- Average depreciation per year: $14,000 ÷ 4 = $3,500/year
- Year-by-year breakdown (linear interpolation):
- Year 0: $22,000
- Year 1: $18,500
- Year 2: $15,000
- Year 3: $11,500
- Year 4: $8,000
- Note: Fixed resale value model uses linear depreciation for display purposes
