Loads Drive Bearing Pressures
Foundations transfer structural loads into soil. Higher loads or weaker soils demand larger contact areas to keep bearing pressure below allowable values.
- Double the load → roughly double the required footing area when soil capacity stays constant.
- Better soil (higher allowable pressure) → smaller foundations for the same load.
Slab Thickness and Reinforcement
Slabs distributing heavy live loads need additional thickness and reinforcement. ASCE 7 load categories inform the assumed wheel loads, pallet loads, or occupancy loads that feed these sizing decisions.
Serviceability Considerations
Loads affect more than strength. They control settlement, crack widths, and deflection. Higher live loads can produce noticeable floor vibration unless stiffness increases.
