CALCULATOR

Primer Calculator – How Much Primer Do You Need?

Estimate how much primer you need based on surface area, surface type, and number of coats. Prepare surfaces correctly before painting

Calculator

Enter the total surface area to be primed in square meters or square feet (use Wall Area Calculator if needed)

Select surface condition: Smooth (painted, sealed surfaces), Porous (plaster, drywall, new surfaces), or Rough (concrete, brick, textured)

Enter primer coverage (defaults based on surface condition: Smooth 10 m²/l, Porous 7 m²/l, Rough 5 m²/l). Check primer can label for specific coverage.

Enter the number of primer coats (default: 1, but 2 coats may be needed for porous or rough surfaces)

Select meters (m²) or feet (ft²) for area measurements

Enable to add a waste margin (5-20%) to account for spillage, touch-ups, and cutting in around edges

How to Calculate

  • 1Enter the total surface area to be primed (use Wall Area Calculator if needed)
  • 2Select the surface condition: Smooth, Porous, or Rough
  • 3The calculator will automatically set default coverage based on surface condition
  • 4Optionally adjust primer coverage if you know the specific coverage from the primer can
  • 5Enter the number of primer coats (typically 1, but 2 for porous or rough surfaces)
  • 6Select the unit system: Meters or Feet
  • 7Optionally enable waste margin and set the percentage (typically 10%)
  • 8Click the Calculate button
  • 9View the estimated primer required in liters or gallons
  • 10See the primer per coat breakdown
  • 11Check the waste-adjusted total if waste margin is enabled
  • 12Review the cans estimate for common primer can sizes
  • 13Review the explanation for calculation details and primer benefits

Examples

Smooth Wall Before Repainting

Inputs

coverage: 10coats: 1

Formula

Primer per Coat = 30 / 10 = 3 liters

Result

30

New Drywall (Porous Surface)

Inputs

coverage: 7coats: 1

Formula

Primer per Coat = 50 / 7 = 7.14 liters

Result

50

Concrete Wall

Inputs

coverage: 5coats: 1

Formula

Primer per Coat = 40 / 5 = 8 liters

Result

40

Two Coats of Primer

Inputs

coverage: 7coats: 2

Formula

Primer per Coat = 25 / 7 = 3.57 liters

Result

25

Imperial Units Example

Inputs

coverage: 400coats: 1

Formula

Primer per Coat = 300 / 400 = 0.75 gallons

Result

300
