Eurocode Load Concepts (EC1)
Eurocode 1 (EN 1991) provides a framework for understanding structural loads and actions across European building practice. This page explains how load concepts influence foundations, slabs, and early estimates in an educational context.

What Eurocode 1 Covers Conceptually
Permanent Actions
These are fixed weights: the structure itself, finishes, fixed equipment. Once installed, they rarely change. Estimators usually know permanent actions early because they come directly from the material schedule.
Variable Actions
Variable actions move or change: people, furniture, storage, vehicles. Eurocode 1 assigns default values by occupancy so a living room, office, or warehouse gets an appropriate allowance.
Environmental Actions
Weather and site conditions add environmental actions: snow on roofs, wind on walls, temperature effects, or seismic shaking. These depend on climate, exposure, and building height.
Load Combinations
For safety, Eurocode 1 requires designers to consider multiple actions acting together. Permanent + variable, permanent + snow, or other combinations establish the governing case.
Why Loads Matter for Foundations and Slabs
Loads translate directly into soil bearing pressure. Higher reactions require larger footing areas to stay within soil limits.
Slab thickness and reinforcement layouts depend on how Eurocode 1 live load categories and environmental actions distribute across the floor plate.
Load combinations also influence crack control and serviceability, so even preliminary takeoffs should document the assumed load category.
